Bio

Hongyou Lu is an Energy/Environment Technology Researcher in the Building and Industrial Applications (BIA) Department of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Her primary focus is on the decarbonization of energy-intensive industries, such as cement, iron and steel, and petrochemical sectors.

Since joining Berkeley Lab in 2008, she has conducted techno-economic analysis of industrial waste heat potential in cement, steel, and glass sectors. Additionally, she has conducted energy-efficiency benchmarking analyses in Chinese cement plants, and provided technical support on energy assessments in various industrial plants, such as iron and steel, cement, petrochemical, pulp and paper, alumina, and food processing facilities. Recently, she analyzed the embodied emissions of key building materials, developed industrial decarbonization roadmaps for five industrial sectors (iron and steel, cement, ammonia, pulp and paper, and textiles) for Indonesia, conducted techno-economic analysis of industrial heating technologies, co-developed the net-zero roadmap for China's steel industry, and evaluated the potential and challenges to electrify key industrial sectors.

Hongyou has a Master of Science in Energy and Resources and a Master of Public Policy from University of California at Berkeley, and a Master of Arts in East Asian Studies from Stanford University. She received her Bachelor of Arts in History and International Relations from Peking University. Hongyou is a U.S. Department of Energy Qualified Specialist of the Process Heating Assessment and Survey Tool.
