Background
Emissions of methane, a short-lived climate pollutant and potent greenhouse gas, have contributed to approximately 30% of the current rise in global average temperatures. China, the world’s largest coal producer and consumer, is a significant contributor of global methane emissions through its coal mining activities. Reducing methane emissions is critical to slowing the adverse impacts of climate change in the near term. To this end, China released a National Action Plan on Methane Emissions Control in November 2023 followed by a revised draft coal mine methane emissions standard in August 2024.
This webinar will highlight key findings from a comprehensive analysis of coal mine methane (CMM) emission dynamics in China, using new data through 2023. We emphasize the importance of addressing regional variations in coal activities and emission profiles. Our analysis identifies key influencers for emission factors (EFs) of individual coal mines, estimates provincial production-weighted average EFs, and assesses their associated uncertainties using bootstrap simulations. Our findings highlight the critical role of regional production shifts and mine-specific characteristics in shaping China’s latest CMM emission trends. Using data and results from this analysis, we will also introduce a publicly available online dashboard of province-specific coal production, coal mine methane emissions, and emission factor data. CMM data experts will be invited to provide commentary.
